September is National Sewing Month
Posted on September 11 2022
Sewing is recognized as an important skill practiced by millions of people and a great contribution to the U.S. economy.
In 1982, at the request of the American Home Sewing and Craft Association, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed September as National Sewing Month. Since then, Sewing Month has been celebrated and promoted in a variety of different ways by sewing organizations in order to inspire new and existing sewists.
Garment workers in the U.S. apparel industry, including sewists, are also an important part of the economy; and valuable skilled and creative members of the workforce. Their jobs require great skill and garment construction knowledge to properly sew an item of clothing, especially one that will last.
The 2022 FABRIC Act was recently introduced to the Senate in May by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and introduced to the House of Representatives by Representative Carolyn Maloney of New York and co-sponsored by Representatives Debbie Dingel of Michigan and Deborah Ross of North Carolina.
It is their goal that with passage of this legislation, it will “cement the United States as the global leader in manufacturing apparel responsibly by putting forth worker safeguards, increased oversight and transparency of the industry, and creating incentives to bring jobs back to the US will have positive impacts on our nation’s economy and commitment to the American worker for generations to come.”
T Shirt Atelier has officially endorsed The FABRIC act as a National Sewing Month action!
Here are some sustainable sewing actions and activities suggestions to celebrate National Sewing Month:
- Support the 2022 FABRIC Act
- Learn to sew if you do not know how
- If you know how to sew, teach someone who does not know how to sew
- Mend your favorite clothing that is damaged so you do not have to throw it away
- Repurpose a piece of clothing into something entirely different. Idea: make a cozy pillow or stuffed animal from a cozy t shirt
- Upcycle a piece of clothing by making it special. Idea: embellish your favorite t-shirt with some colorful embroidery
- Make t-shirt yarn out of old t-shirts
- Naturally dye a t-shirt a new color, and voila it’s a new t-shirt
