Layering Sustainable Fabrics for Fall
Posted on October 23 2022
When it comes to keeping you cozy…sustainable textiles are terrific.
Cotton
Cotton works well for a middle or outer layer. Thicker cotton garments keep the cold out without irritating sensitive skin. However, cotton does absorb moisture, so you don’t want to use it as an inner layer if you’ll be sweating.
Hemp
Hemp is super sustainable. It grows faster than any other crop, produces more fiber per acre, and it has a low agricultural and production impact on the environment. Hemp is also great for both cold weather and warm weather. In the winter, hemp traps your body heat, so it will stay warm and cozy. As spring comes, hemp’s fibers actually allow it to breathe so it will stay cool.
Fall is the perfect time for layering. Different types of fabrics layered effectively can help keep you comfortable in the cooler weather.
The first or base layer closest to your skin is to help you remain dry. Even in the cold it is possible to get sweaty; and if this layer doesn’t keep you dry, your skin will eventually become damp and cold. Choose a breathable and lightweight fabric like hemp.
Add a second layer to insulate. This is for additional warmth to trap heat while still breathable, especially for outdoor physical activities. A thicker cotton fabric is a good choice.
Whether it’s one or multiple cozy layers, sustainable textiles such as cotton and hemp can keep you comfortable when the weather is cool.
