National Women’s History Month
Posted on March 18 2025

March is National Women’s History Month. The National Women’s History Alliance established National History Month to support, protect, and amplify diverse voices in history – ensuring that women’s history remains visible, valued, and celebrated for all generations.
The Alliance selects and publishes the yearly theme. The theme for Women's History Month 2025 is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”
T Shirt Atelier is inspired by the many American women throughout history who have made key contributions to apparel and fashion in the United States. Some of these early pioneering women are:
Elizabeth Keckley (1818-1907):
The earliest woman to achieve success. She was most notably the dressmaker and confidant of first lady Mary Todd Lincoln. She was born into slavery in 1818, became an accomplished seamstress while a slave, purchased her freedom and eventually started a dress business in Washington, D.C.
Ann Lowe (1898-1981):
Known for designing Jacqueline Kennedy's wedding dress, and later opening the first Black-owned clothing store on Madison Avenue.
Claire McCardell (1903-1958):
Pioneered American sportswear and is considered a key figure in the development of American fashion.
Vera Maxwell (1901-1995):
She was part of the pioneering group of American designers creating more relaxed and quintessentially American clothing. In the 1940s, she designed a cotton coverall uniform for war workers known as the "Rosie the Riveter" jumpsuit or coveralls.
There are many women in our history, our foremothers…they are in our family history, local history and national history…in various occupations…and they have left us a legacy of varied contributions to inspire us.
Let us honor and celebrate the achievements of those inspiring women and let us inspire and build bridges for future generations of inspiring women.
T Shirt Atelier is also inspired by our women owned sustainable + ethical brands!
