Great Outdoors Month
Posted on June 11 2023
June is Great Outdoors Month and started as Great Outdoors Week in 1998 under President Bill Clinton. This grew into a month-long celebration during subsequent Presidential administrations. The U.S. Senate officially designated Great Outdoors Month in 2019.
Recreation in the great outdoors has health, social and economic benefits.
Your sleep improves. Natural light keeps your circadian rhythms in check so your sleep patterns aren’t interrupted. Exposing yourself to sunlight in the early morning is important.
Spending time outdoors around others is social and benefits your mental health through exercise which also keeps you physically fit.
The sunshine is a natural source of vitamin D. Most of us are low in this vitamin which is essential in maintaining a healthy immune system.
Celebrate all the wonderful gifts of the great outdoors by getting outside in nature. Great Outdoors Month reminds us to explore the outdoors around us - national, state, and local parks, wildlife refuges, and beautiful beach preserves. Hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, camping and canoeing are the many ways to enjoy the open spaces of the great outdoors and the extraordinary landscapes in the U.S.
The National Park Service has a network of more than 1,300 trails as part of its National Trails System. Whether in an urban, suburban or rural setting, many are close to home and provide an easy and excellent form of recreation.
