The Influence of Color
Posted on May 18 2022
Spring bursts with color. It arrives with a fresh and vibrant palette. Be inspired by, and inspiring with, the color that is blooming all around us.
Color (and the color we wear) can affect us.
According to an article by Vanessa Van Edwards in Science of People, “Research shows that colors can greatly affect our moods and the way other people respond to us. Amazingly, colors can even change our heart rate, blood pressure and respiration, as researchers Keith Jacobs and Frank Hustmyer discovered in 1974.” In this article, she created and shared this color guide:
“The color wheel shows the relationship between colors. It was invented in 1666 by Isaac Newton, who mapped the color spectrum onto a circle. The color wheel is the basis of color theory, because it shows the relationship between colors. Color theory is a practical combination of art and science that’s used to determine what colors look good together. (Canva)”
The color wheel is divided into cool and warm colors. Complimentary colors are on the opposite side of the color wheel.
Warm colors in the red area of the color spectrum include red, orange, and yellow. These warm colors evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort like love and the sun and also feelings of anger and hostility.
Cool colors in the blue area of the color spectrum are known include blue, purple, and green. These colors are often described as calming like water and can also elicit feelings of sadness or indifference.
Use the influence of color in your wardrobe to lift spirits like mood-boosting brights or soft pastels to create a calming influence. Wear complementary or monochromatic colors to create a feeling of balance by choosing a color on the wheel and then picking the color opposite for a complementary one or by selecting shades of the same color which are monochromatic.
