The Heat of Summer
Posted on July 02 2024
This Summer of 2024 could be the hottest on record in 2000 years!
Global warming is occurring. A worldwide situation with hotter heat waves, and more frequently, will continue to create dangerous conditions for many people all over the planet .
This is happening because of human-caused climate change from burning coal and other fossil fuels since the 1700s which releases carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The carbon (CO2) then traps heat in the atmosphere which raises global temperature.
According to scientists, the world must cut carbon emissions to zero by 2050.
Simple suggestions to reduce carbon emissions…by reducing our carbon footprint:
- Drive less, walk or bicycle to short destinations and whenever possible
- Turnoff lights and unplug devices when not in use
- Use LED light bulbs
- When you drive keep car tires properly inflated because this uses less fuel
- Maintain an even speed when driving which is more fuel efficient
- Use less home fuel by using moderate thermostat settings, slightly lower in winter and slightly higher in summer
- Choose a more fuel efficient vehicle or hybrid or electric
- Wrap an insulation blanket around the water heater and set to no higher than 120 degrees
- Use less hot water by installing low flow showerheads and washing clothes in cold or warm water
- Recycle at least half of your household waste including composting all food waste either yourself or through a composting program
To keep cool in the heat and protect the environment, wear clothing made of natural fibers. The best textile is hemp because it keeps you cool in the heat, quickly absorbs and releases moisture preventing sweat buildup, is highly breathable and resistant to bacterial growth, provides optimal airflow and prevents unpleasant odors. Hemp requires little water and often no extra irrigation as a crop; and has an extremely high yield per acre.
Other optimal fibers include any organic ones of cotton, linen, flax, and silk.
