Heavenly Hemp

Hemp is one of our favorite fabrics!
Humans have been using hemp to make textile for thousands of years. Read our previous journal post about the history of hemp (December 2020).
Garments commonly made with hemp include dresses, skirts, pants, jackets, t-shirts, hoodies, and clothing for children. In particular, this type of fabric is highly popular for t-shirts since it is resistant to wear and tear. Most cotton t-shirts start to warp, shrink, or fall apart after comparably few washes, but hemp t-shirts retain their shape and integrity for years and years.
Hemp fabric comes from the stem of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa L.), a cannabis species. Hemp fabric is similar to fabrics like linen, jute, flax, and bamboo, all of which are obtained from plant stems — or basts. So, these fabrics are collectively called bast fibers.
Hemp fabric is a versatile, sustainable material made from the fibers of the Cannabis sativa plant. It has many benefits, including:
Strength: Hemp is three times stronger than cotton and is known for its durability. Hemp clothing can last longer than cotton clothing.
Antimicrobial: Hemp is naturally antibacterial and fights against bacteria like MRSA and E. coli. It's also resistant to fungal stains and mold.
Breathable: Hemp helps keep the body cooler during summer and warmer during winter.
UV resistant: Hemp fabric is resistant to UV rays.
Renewable: Hemp is a highly renewable resource.
Biodegradable: Hemp is biodegradable.
Hypoallergenic: Hemp is hypoallergenic.
Wears in: Hemp fabric becomes softer with time.
Durable: Hemp clothing lasts for many many years.
Hemp fabric purists may choose clothing that is made with 100 percent hemp, it is also common to mix this type of fabric with other textiles. For instance, blends of cotton and hemp are popular, and it's also common to find this textile blended with silk. Blending hemp with other fabrics can make this textile softer while remaining durable.
